Automotive News: Investigation points to driver error in Prius wreck

(CNN) — Early evidence points to driver error as the reason a 2005 Prius sped into a stone wall on March 9, according to federal investigators.

“Information retrieved from the vehicle’s onboard computer systems indicated there was no application of the brakes and the throttle was fully open,” according to a statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The statement suggests the driver may have been stepping on the accelerator, instead of the brake, as she told police. Investigators from Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration inspected the wrecked 2005 Prius on Wednesday and extracted data from the car’s event data recorder.

A housekeeper who was driving the car told police it accelerated on its own as she eased forward down her employer’s driveway, causing her to crash into a stone wall on the other side of the road. The housekeeper was treated for minor injuries. No other cars were involved in the accident. Police said the driver, whose name has not been released pending the investigation, has a clean driving record.

Why Many People At Present Tend To Get Hybrid Cars

All commuters have felt the pinch at the pump, as gas prices rise higher and higher. More of these commuters are looking for ways to stretch their fuel dollars, including considering hybrid cars. A hybrid car combines the traditional gas engine with an electric motor and a Lithium ion battery.

One hybrid car consumer is Emily Callahan, a 24-year-old landscape architect. She purchased her first car in Spring of 2007, and chose the Nissan Altima Hybrid. She was one of the first purchasers of this hybrid, a mid-sized sedan that had only come out January of that year.

Callahan says that she was influenced in her decision by various factors, including fuel efficiency, environmental impact, size, and tax incentives. Callahan, by being one of the first purchasers of a hybrid car, qualified for tax refund of $2300 which equaled the full sales tax on the car.

The tax perks are certainly beneficial, but the real savings comes at the pump. Hybrids let a consumer spend less on gas. Callahan’s Altima hybrid gets an average of 36 miles per gallon and this definitely adds up.

Identifying The Need For Automotive Sales Training

When it comes to any business environment, the requirement for training is always vital and this doesn’t differ in the automotive industry.

Automotive sales training is essential in the vehicle field but there often seems to be a separation in training when it comes to the service department and the sales department.

Within the sales department the target is on developing understanding and mastering sales techniques which would enable an individual to make connections with clients so as to sell cars. Though, in service departments the focus is on vehicle knowledge and taking the client’s order. The issue with this type of automotive training is that while vehicle knowledge is essential, you will limit your profit opportunities when you do not have an individual that could make sales to further your service department opportunities.

Your service advisor is usually the individual who performs the meet and greet with customers, assessing what the customer is searching for and recommending additional services. While this person might have a great amount of knowledge on the client’s vehicle, when they can’t convey this information in a persuasive and informative manner they would likely be turned down for extra services.

How Automotive Consulting Can Help You To Maximize Service Department Profits

As the economy continues to ride on it’s present financial rollercoaster one of the hardest hit industries has been the automotive industry. Fewer people are purchasing new cars as a result of either a loss in monetary savings, or concerns as to what their financial future may hold. While this might seem catastrophic for the sales department of a dealership, it has created new opportunities in dealership service departments.

The fact that a lot more individuals are holding on to their older cars creates a new demand to keep those cars operational, opening the opportunity for a higher sales potential. This new potential has even created a demand for Automotive Consulting as dealerships seek resources to maximize this possibility.

You can go to almost any dealership and when you consult the service team you’ll discover that training focuses mainly on vehicle knowledge and customer service. This needless to say is vital when your main purpose is to maintain and repair vehicles on behalf of vehicle owners.
